When an app asks you to claim Proof of Presence, World ID app guides you through a short selfie check. The process is privacy-preserving and happens on your mobile device. The app receives confirmation that you completed the check, without receiving your selfie, face data, or identity.
What Proof of Presence does
- Proves you’re present. Proof of Presence uses a selfie to confirm that you’re present during the check.

- Works with apps that accept it. Each app decides which World ID Proofs it accepts.
What Proof of Presence is not
- It’s not an identity check. It does not confirm your name, date of birth, address, or other identity details.
- It’s not Proof of Human. Proof of Human is claimed by verifying in person at an Orb and provides World ID’s highest level of assurance.
- It does not share your selfie with the app. Apps receive confirmation that you completed the check, not your selfie or face data.
How it works
You’ll usually start in an app that accepts World ID Proofs, then continue in World ID app.
- Review the request. Check what the app is asking you to prove.
- Get ready. World ID app shows guidance for lighting and positioning your face.
Take a selfie. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the check.
- Return to the app. The app receives confirmation that you completed the check, without receiving your selfie or face data.
Where you might use Proof of Presence
A website or app may ask you to claim Proof of Presence to confirm you’re present during a check:
- Access features or communities meant for real, unique humans.
- Help reduce automated or suspicious activity.
- Add a lightweight human check when an account looks suspicious.
What happens next is up to the website or app. Proof of Presence confirms that you completed the check, and the website or app decides what to do next.
Your privacy
- Your selfie and face data never leave your phone. The liveness check runs entirely on your device.
- No single party verifies your data. The uniqueness check uses secure anonymous multi-party computation (AMPC), so the numeric representation of your face stays hidden from every party, including Tools for Humanity. Your photo and face data stay on your device.
- Integration partners receive only a result. Websites and apps get proof and signals, never your image or any face data, and Proof of Presence never reveals your identity.
What can I do if Proof of Presence fails?
During the selfie, World ID app guides you in real time and may ask you to move closer, improve the lighting, or uncover your face. If a check doesn't pass, you'll see a "Let's try that again" screen where you can retry.
If it keeps failing, try the following before your next attempt:
- Check that your World ID app is up to date
- Make sure that the lighting conditions are optimal
- Remove glasses, colored contact lenses, or face masks
- Remove any protective covers from the camera lens on your phone, and ensure the lens is clean
- Restart your device, switch internet connection, and try again
- Disable any VPN if in use
- Turn off the power saving mode (iOS devices)
If it fails repeatedly, you may have to wait some time before your next retry.
