Staying Private & Secure
Understand your data and keep your account safe.
Privacy & Data
How does the Periodic Data Deletion Process work?
To protect your privacy and ensure we do not retain your information longer than necessary, we run a daily Periodic Data Deletion Process. This automated process identifies inactive accounts and removes personal data that is no longer needed to provide our services.
This article explains when an account becomes eligible for deletion, what data is removed, and what you need to do if you want your account included in this process.
When is an account considered inactive?
For an account to be eligible for automatic deletion, it must meet specific inactivity criteria.
An account is considered inactive if:
- The account has not been used for 24 months or more.
- The World ID has not been verified through an Orb.
-
The account is not currently blocked due to fraud investigations.
What information is deleted?
Once an account meets the criteria above, our system permanently removes personal data that is not essential for legal compliance.
This includes:
- Profile information: Username and profile picture.
- Activity logs: User activity records and communication history.
- Support history: Previous support tickets and chat history.
- Device data: Device fingerprint data.
- Marketing data: Information used for marketing communications.
-
Analytics data: Optional analytics events stored in our systems.
What information is retained?
We retain a limited amount of data only when required by law or for fraud prevention purposes. For example, we may retain certain records to comply with:
- Tax regulations
- Financial reporting obligations
-
Investigations related to violations of our Terms of Service
How long does the process take?
The deletion process runs daily. Once your account becomes eligible, that means it was inactive for 24 months or more, the deletion of data across our systems is typically completed within 15 business days.
Can I request deletion sooner?
Yes. You do not need to wait 24 months for this automatic process. If you would like your data to be deleted sooner, please contact our Privacy Support Team through the in-app Support Chat or through our Privacy Portal.

How can I opt-in to share my data with Tools for Humanity?
By participating in our Data Opt-In feature, you can help us train our AI models and keep World ID safe for every human. This feature is entirely optional and you can enable it or disable it anytime from your World ID app settings (where available).
Why Opt-In?
- The data you share with us helps improve fraud detection.
- Occasionally, authentication processes such as face or Orb captures might not work as intended due to factors like unique facial features, environmental conditions, or system limitations. Sharing your data helps us quickly identify and resolve these issues, ensuring our services remain secure and accessible.
What Data Is Shared?
When you opt in, we securely collect and analyze relevant data, which might include:
- Photos taken by the Orb.
- Images from authentication attempts.
- Metadata helpful for troubleshooting and improvements.
Note: Sharing your Orb and Face Authentication photos trains our AI models with real-world examples, enhancing their accuracy and inclusiveness in ways synthetic data cannot match.
Ensuring Your Privacy
Your privacy is our top priority:
- Participation is completely voluntary.
- You can revoke your consent at any time from the settings.
- Data will never be shared externally or used for purposes other than improving authentication reliability.
- All data is securely stored and promptly deleted upon opting out.
-
We process your personal information under the highest security standards. After 90 days, we’ll check if you still want to participate in improving World ID for everyone.
For more details on data sharing and privacy, please visit our Privacy Notice – Research and Development.
How To Participate
You have complete control over your data sharing preferences, and you can opt in through three convenient ways:
1. From the Settings Tab
Tap your profile picture to open Settings, then navigate to Privacy & Security and turn on the "Help improve World ID for everyone" toggle. You can opt out at any time.
When enabled, the photos taken by the Orb (normally stored only on your device) will be securely sent to our servers to train the AI models powering World ID.
2. Proactive Pop-Up Invitations
We may occasionally prompt you with a pop-up asking if you'd like to opt in. These prompts appear when:
- You've encountered repeated issues with authentication (face or Orb captures).
- You're part of specific test groups aimed at improving system performance.
- Your experiences could significantly help address unique challenges (e.g., issues arising from unusual facial features or iris authentication years after initial enrollment).
Accepting these invitations will automatically enable data sharing in your settings.
3. Automatic Prompts After Authentication Issues
If you repeatedly encounter authentication issues, you might see an automated pop-up inviting you to share your data. Accepting this prompt automatically enables data sharing.
Thank you for helping us improve our service and make the experience better for everyone!

What happens with my data after deletion?
We support data minimization and storage limitations and do not collect or process information that is no longer needed from you. At World ID App, we retain only the data required to provide and improve our services and to meet our legal and safety obligations.
To make sure all your information is appropriately deleted before deleting your account, make sure you complete the following steps:
- Back up any important information you might need later (e.g., username, app settings).
- Review any pending activity in the app and ensure it’s completed or canceled.
- Turn off optional features like push notifications if you want to stop receiving messages immediately.
Once you request account deletion, the following happens:
- World ID App Profile: Your username will be permanently deleted.
- Orb Verification: Proof of ownership for your World ID will be deleted.
Device Data: NFC identifiers and device IDs tied to your World ID are removed.
NFC (Near Field Communication) is a wireless technology that allows your phone to read information from a compatible card, device, or document located in close proximity. For example, when you tap your phone on your passport during verification. Most modern smartphones have NFC built in, and it needs to be turned on in your phone’s settings.
- Local Storage: All app data saved on your phone, iCloud, or Google Drive will be erased.
- Analytics Data (Optional): If you opted into app analytics, your data will be cleared, and tracking will be disabled.
- Push Notifications: All notification tokens and history will be deleted, and push notifications will be disabled.
- AI Training Opt-in: If you contributed data to help train AI models, that information will be permanently deleted.
If you do not want to delete your account, you can choose to only remove your optional data. Upon doing so, the following information will be removed:
- Your username.
- Push Notifications: All notifications and notification history will be deleted, and push notifications will be disabled.
- AI Training Opt-in: If you contributed data to help train AI models, that information will be permanently deleted.
Important information
Please note that if your account has been risk‑flagged, the backend data tied to that flag will not be deleted. However, you still have the ability to delete your app and any data you have stored in the cloud. In some cases, we may retain fully anonymized information that cannot be tied back to you; this anonymized data is used for analytics, research, and product improvement and does not identify individual users.
Data published to a public blockchain such as information included in a blockchain transaction, cannot be technically removed. That includes your public wallet key and the transaction history associated with it; because these records exist on a public ledger, we are unable to delete or alter them and are not legally required to do so. Separately, there are circumstances where we must retain certain information to comply with legal or regulatory obligations, for example for tax, auditing, or other compliance purposes.
Finally, we will retain any data necessary to keep World ID App functioning for you, including information required to maintain your account and deliver the services you use. For more detail about how we collect, use, and retain information, please see our Privacy Notice.
Why do I still see some data after requesting optional data deletion?
When you request deletion of optional data in the World ID App, the respective data collected is immediately deleted. This affects the following data:
- Your username.
- Push Notifications: All notification tokens and history will be deleted, and push notifications will be disabled.
- AI Training Opt-in: If you contributed data to help train AI models, that information will be permanently deleted.
Other data will continue to be stored until you request account deletion.

7. The deletion request will show you a Requested status when you submit it. The status will change to Deleted once the action is completed.
It can take up to 30 days for your deletion to be carried out on all of our systems. As soon as you receive a confirmation of your data deletion, you can proceed to uninstall the World ID App from your device.
It's up to you if you want to keep your backup to access the World ID App in the future. Keep in mind, if you decide to delete your backup, then your current account will not be recoverable.
If you have a personal data request that goes beyond deleting your optional data, please take a look at our articles, How do I delete my Account? Or Where do I reach out for personal data requests?, for guidance.
What data is deleted with this action?
When you request Data Deletion we delete any personal information attached to your account like your username and your profile picture (if it was added to your account) and you won’t lose access to the World ID App. The rest of the information is deleted through the Account Deletion Feature (like public and private keys and data backups).
What is the difference between Data Deletion and Account Deletion?
Data deletion involves removing specific personal information (i.e., your username) while allowing you to retain access to the World ID App. In contrast, account deletion means permanently wiping your account, resulting in the loss of all access to the app and its features.
Please note both are automated features and your data or your account will be deleted instantaneously.
What happens if I want to delete my data and I lose access to the World ID App?
If you want to delete your World ID App data but can’t access the app, you can request assistance from our Support Team through the app, or through our official social media support channels to try to restore access to your account. Once you regain access, you can follow the steps above to delete your data.
If you couldn’t perform the data deletion through the app and you are an inactive user for more than twenty four months, we will always make sure that your data is deleted during our periodic data deletion procedures. Through this process, we make sure to clean up our databases from information that is no longer necessary to keep or process.

How do I delete my account?
The Account Deletion feature gives you full control over your account, allowing you to remove your profile from the World ID App permanently.
Is Account Deletion the same as Data Deletion?
No. It’s essential to distinguish between account deletion and data deletion, as each serves different purposes.
Data deletion (“Clear optional data”) involves removing personal information such as profile data, optional analytics and push notification and face and iris images donated for training, while allowing you to retain access to the World ID App.
In contrast, account deletion permanently removes a user's World ID account, resulting in the loss of access to all apps, backups, and features associated with that account. This includes access to World App, as there is no separation between the apps at the account level—a user has a single account that is shared across both apps. As a result, deleting the account from one app also affects access to the other.
Deleting your account from World ID App will also delete your back-ups and private keys, which extends to the World App.
Account Deletion
To request a permanent deletion of your account, follow these steps:
- Tap your profile photo in the top left corner.
- Select the Privacy & Security option
- Tap Delete account.
- You’ll then be asked to confirm your choice. Tap Confirm account deletion to proceed.
What happens after you confirm deletion?
- The deletion process may take up to 30 days to complete.
- You will receive one confirmation only, including a timestamp of the request. Please keep this for your records.
- Once confirmed, you may uninstall World ID App from your device.
You may keep your backup if you plan to access the World ID App in the future. However, if you delete your backup, your account will not be recoverable.
If you have a personal data request that goes beyond deleting your optional data, please take a look at our article, Where do I reach out for personal data requests?, for guidance.
What data is deleted?
Once your account is deleted, the following data is no longer accessible:
- Profile information
- Account data
- Push notifications
- Optional data for model training
- World ID
Exceptions to account deletion
As part of our compliance and legal obligations, there is one notable exception to the account deletion process. Users who are flagged for fraud will be notified that we cannot delete their information for security reasons.
If you have more questions about the specifics of what data has been removed after account deletion, please reach out through our Privacy Portal.
What happens if I want to delete my data and I lose access to World ID App?
If you want to delete your World ID App data but can’t access the app, you can request assistance from our Support Team through the app or through our official social media support channels to try to restore access to your account. Once you regain access, you can follow the steps above to delete your data.
If you couldn’t perform the data deletion through the app and you are an inactive user for more than twenty-four months, we will always make sure that your data is deleted during our periodic data deletion procedures. Where do I reach out for personal data requests?
What is considered a privacy request and what is not?
A privacy request is related specifically to your personal information and any concerns regarding its security. If you have questions about account access, loss of backup, changing usernames, or issues with operators, please contact our Support Team.
Additionally, if you have concerns about scams or fraud, these should also be directed to the Support Team, unless they involve the deletion of your personal information. For instance, if you wish to delete your World ID data because you were under 18 when you opened the account, or if you were pressured to perform the iris verification and now you wish to delete your information, our Privacy Team can assist you with your rights in those situations.
Should I provide any personal information when contacting Privacy Support?
Generally, no, you don’t need to provide any additional personal information upfront. In very rare cases, they may ask for additional details such as username to help identify your account in our system.
IMPORTANT: Please remember that you should not share sensitive information such as photos, social security numbers, ID numbers, addresses, or financial details with us. Keeping your information safe is our priority!
Updating Personal Data
You can update your username or phone number directly from the Settings in your World ID profile. For more details, visit our Help Center Article: How do I update my account settings?
Note: At this time, only usernames and profile pictures can be updated in the World ID App. Email addresses cannot be changed through the app.
Deleting Personal Data
If you'd like to delete your personal data, you can do so in the World ID App by following ourguide. Once you've deleted your data in the app, if you'd like, you can go ahead and delete the app and any backup data that you may have.
You can visit theTools for Humanity Personal Data Request Form, where you can submit a request form for the Privacy Team to review. Make sure to fill in as much detail as possible, and to input a correct username if the request is related to your account.

How do I export my private key?
About Private Keys
Before exporting your private key, it’s important to understand what it is. We recommend only exporting your private key if you fully understand what you are doing.
A private key is a secret code that proves you own something and lets you access it. Think of it like a master password.
🔑 Anyone with your private key can access what belongs to you.
🔐 Keep it private—never share it with anyone.
💡 A public key (or address) can be shared to receive information, but your private key should only be known to you.
⚠️ If you lose your private key, you lose access permanently. There’s no way to recover it.
Where do I find my private key in World ID App?
- Tap your Profile icon at the top of the screen to access the Settings menu
- Select Privacy & Security (iOS)
- Open Private Key
How can I unlock and export my private key?
Once you perform the steps listed above to find its location, proceed as follows:
- To initiate the unlocking process, tap Unlock private key
- Once you read and acknowledge the risk warnings, select the Understood button
- Follow the prompts to confirm your request to unlock the key
- Once confirmed, an unlocking period will begin
- A countdown timer will show you the time left to unlock the key
- This period is set to prevent potential attackers from stealing your private key
- When the private key is unlocked, it will be available for display for 72 hours
- You’ll see the options to either copy or reveal the key. Select your desired action
After 72 hours have passed, the key will be locked again. If needed, a new unlocking process must be performed.
REMEMBER: Any action involving your private key is risky. Never share it with anyone. Our Support team will never ask you for your private key.

1. Can I access my private key even if some features are blocked in my World ID App?
Yes, you can tap the Export Private Key option as shown in this example:
2. How can I keep my private key safe?
The best way to keep your private key safe is to never export it. Since there is only one private key linked to your account, it is essential to store it securely.
To prevent this, we recommend:
- Never sharing your private key with anyone. Storing it in a safe place, such as a secure password manager or offline storage. Using a trusted and secure cryptowallet that protects your private key.
By keeping your private key safe, you ensure that only you have control over your assets.
3. Can I generate a new private key?
No. only one private key exists per account.
IMPORTANT: World ID App does not have access to your private key. Users are responsible for the risk of loss of their private keys and neither TFH nor World ID App is able to recover such keys.

What are best practices to avoid airdrop scams?
An airdrop is when a project distributes free tokens directly to users’ crypto wallets. While legitimate projects use airdrops for promotions, they are also commonly exploited in scams.
Scammers create fake airdrops to trick users into connecting their wallets and approving transactions. If the smart contract behind the airdrop is malicious, this can put your funds at risk or allow unauthorized access to your wallet.
Best practices to avoid airdrop scams
Only interact with verified projects: Before claiming an airdrop, confirm the project is legitimate by checking its official website and multiple verified social media channels.
Be cautious when connecting your wallet: Avoid connecting your wallet to unfamiliar or unverified smart contracts. If something doesn’t feel right, do not proceed.
Double-check links and URLs: Always review the URL carefully before clicking or tapping on it. Make sure it leads to the official website and has been shared through an official announcements channel.
Do your own research: Look for feedback from other users and community discussions to help determine whether the airdrop is legitimate.
Important: Only accept airdrops from verified profiles and sources you absolutely trust. If you are unsure, do not interact with the airdrop.

How can I keep my World ID App safe?
Keeping your World ID App secure is essential. Protect your device, your backups, and your credentials by following these best practices:
1. Protect your phone
NEVER allow strangers to handle your phone.
Orb Operators should never ask to handle your phone. If anyone does, stop interacting with them and report the encounter to our Support team.
Always keep your phone locked when not in use.
Keep your operating system updated to the latest version.
Do not jailbreak (iOS).
Only download apps from official stores such as the Apple App Store.
2. Enable biometric authentication
Adding biometric protection helps prevent unauthorized access.
-
On iOS (Face ID)
On your World ID App, tap your profile picture to open Settings.
Select the Privacy & Security option.

How can I avoid Orb scams?
At Orb verification sites
World Operators are independent contractors who help people verify their unique humanness at an Orb.
Operators and members of their teams should NEVER:
- Ask for money, cryptocurrency, or gifts.
- Request for any personal information, such as a phone number, address, or email address.
- Offer money in exchange for anything.
- Handle your personal device or ask you to hand it over during verification.
Important: Verification must always be completed with you handling your own device. The Operator should guide you verbally but must not touch your phone at any point.
If an Operator or a member of their team tries to scam or deceive you, does not explain the project openly and transparently, or attempts to handle your device, stop interacting with them and submit a report via World ID App.
Orb verifications at other locations
Only verify your World ID at authorized Orb locations listed in World ID App.
- Be aware of impostor World representatives.
Do not trust individuals offering verification outside of locations shown in the app.
Do not verify in unofficial or unlisted places.
- If individuals are not at a location with working Orbs (the sphere used to verify proof of personhood) and are not wearing World-branded clothing, do not trust them and submit a report via World ID App immediately.
For more details, you can check out our article What should I expect when getting my World ID verified at an Orb location?

Safety tips when verifying with an Orb
World emphasizes the importance of users following the instructions provided in World ID App when verifying themselves. Each user is responsible for ensuring their own safety and privacy to avoid scams or misuse.
To ensure a safe experience, consider the following recommendations:
- Use your own phone and keep it secure: Complete the process only with your personal device and do not share it with others. After verification, keep your cell phone secure to ensure that only you can access your World ID, along with all of the benefits associated with being able to demonstrate your humanity and uniqueness.
- You must be over 18 years old to complete the verification.
- Verify only at authorized locations: Follow directions from official World Operators and ensure the site appears in World ID App. Avoid people offering verification nearby or in unlisted places.
- People offering exchanges around activation centers are not part of the World Team. Authorized Operators will not pressure you to act immediately.
- Legitimate World Operator Partners and representatives will never ask you to share your password, two-step verification codes, phone number, or private keys. If someone claiming to be from World asks you for this information, it is a scam.
Privacy commitment
World was conceived and is fully committed to protecting individual privacy. World does not want to know who you are; only that you are human. To be part of the World community and network, no personal information is required, such as email, phone number, address, name, etc. If you see that this is happening, please report it.
The project does not seek to collect and store data; participation is completely voluntary and aims to give people control over their own information.

Troubleshooting
Select a scenario from the options shown below to follow the applicable troubleshooting instructions.
I want to move my account to a new phone.
If you're trying to restore access on a new device while still having access to your account on another one, please follow the steps in this article: How do I move my account to a new phone?
I set an Apple passkey as my login method, and I want to restore my account on an Android phone.
Apple Passkeys are not natively supported on Android. You may try these options instead:
- Restoring access to your account using another iOS device.
- If you added more than one login method to your account settings, try using your Apple or Google options to sign in.
I forgot my password/passkey.
World ID App does not have access to your password or passkeys, which means our Support team cannot reset or recover them on your behalf. Try logging in using any other login method previously added to your account (Apple or Google Account).
My account was not found.
If your selected login method is not found or linked to an existing account, try a different method. If you've never created a World ID App account, you may choose that option instead.
Translations may differ slightly from the original English content. For the most accurate information, please refer to the article's English version if any discrepancies occur.
Why can I only have one account linked to my device?
One of the measures implemented to protect your account and personal information is limiting each device to a single World ID App account.
The limitation of one account per device is a crucial security measure designed to protect your personal information, prevent fraud, and ensure that each user's account remains secure and verified. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, but it's a necessary step to maintain the safety and integrity of our platform.
What to Do If You Encounter Issues with Multiple Accounts
If our system detects that your device has been previously associated with another World ID App account, you may encounter issues when trying to log in or verify a new account. Here's what you can do:
-
Log in to Your Verified Account:
- If you already have a verified account, please log in to that account. This ensures that you continue using the account that is already tied to your device.
-
Restore Your Existing Account:
- If you’ve lost access to your verified account, try restoring it by using any of the login options you’ve previously set up in your account settings.
Important: We strongly recommend adding a login method in advance to avoid permanent loss of access. Please refer to this article for more details: How do I recover access to my account?
Can I log in to my existing account on a new device?
Yes. If you’re changing devices, you can log in to your existing account using your credentials. Follow the instructions outlined here.
Translations may differ slightly from the original English content. For the most accurate information, please refer to the article's English version if any discrepancies occur.
Why can't you recover my account or change passwords on my behalf?
Understanding Data Storage Rules and Account Recovery Limitations
Your security and privacy are our top priorities. To maintain the highest level of security, we have implemented strict data storage rules that ensure your personal information and account details remain under your control.
Here's why we cannot assist you with recovering accounts on your behalf:
1. Non-Custodial Account Structure
World ID App operates as a non-custodial service, which means that we do not have access to your private keys, passkeys, passwords, or any other sensitive information associated with your account. This ensures that only you have control over your account, but it also means that if you lose your passwords, passkeys or private keys, we cannot recover them for you.
Key Points:
- Your Keys, Your Control: Since we don’t store your private keys, passkeys, or passwords, you are the only one who can manage access to your account.
- No Backdoor Access: Our system is designed without any backdoor or administrative access to user accounts, making it impossible for us to intervene directly.
2. User Responsibility
Because of our non-custodial model, it’s essential that you take responsibility for securing your own account information. We strongly recommend enabling all available security features to help protect your account.
3. What You Can Do
If you find yourself locked out of your account, here’s what you can do:
- Use a Saved Login Method: If you have set up a login method in your account settings, you can use it to recover your account.
- Verification Through Orb: Our team has implemented Orb verification as an additional method for account recovery.
- Refer to the following article for detailed information: How do I recover access to my account?
4. How We Help
While we cannot recover your account for you, we are here to guide you through the steps you can take to protect your account and troubleshoot issues:
- Help Center: Visit other articles in our Help Center for detailed information on account security and recovery options.
- Support Team: Contact our support team for guidance on how to secure your account and prevent future issues.
By empowering you with full control over your account, we help ensure that your data remains secure. Remember to use all available security features and keep your account information safe.

I'm having trouble logging in to my account.
Login issues
If you’re having trouble logging in, check the following:
- You have only one verified account.
- Your device is linked to only one account.
The app does not support multiple accounts for security reasons.
Then try:
- Fully closing and reopening the app
- Updating to the latest app version
Restoring Access
You can restore access using any login method previously saved in your account settings.

How do I move my account to a new phone?
If you're switching to a new device and want to ensure a smooth transition of your account without issues, follow these steps:
Before Switching Phones
1. Manage Account Access in Settings
Ensure that you have at least one login method to your account on your old phone.
This ensures your account details are saved securely and can be restored on your new device.
Important: Switching to a new phone without setting up a login method means you can’t recover your account later. Please add at least one login method before moving to your new device.
2. Remove World ID App from your old phone.
Delete World ID App from your old phone. Only do this once you're completely sure that you have successfully added at least one login method to your account.
Warning
- World ID App does not have access to passwords or passkeys.
-
If you're using an Apple passkey as a login method and you're moving your account to an Android device:
- Please note that Apple passkeys do not work on Android devices. This means you won’t be able to use your Apple-generated passkey to log in on an Android phone.
- Before switching devices, make sure you have at least one other login method added to your World ID App account so you don’t lose access.
A passkey is a way to sign in using your face, fingerprint, or device PIN — no password needed.
Move Your Account to a New Phone
Follow the steps listed below once you install World ID App on the new device.
1. Open World ID App and Select Log In.
After ticking the box accepting Terms and Conditions, always choose the option to log in to an existing account. It is very important that you do not select "I am a new user", which will force you to create a new account and prevent you from restoring your old account.
2. Choose an Account Access Method.
Select the applicable method you'd like to use for restoration from the list provided, and follow the screen prompts to complete the login process.
3. Restore Access
If your chosen method is found to be linked to an existing World ID account, your account will be restored on your new device.
